The J.C. Penney chain was established in 1902 by James Cash Penney in Kemmerer, WY. By 1917, there were 175 stores in 22 states. By 1941, there were 1,600 stores in 48 states. In 2020, the company filed for bankruptcy and closed about 250 stores. There are about 670 stores left. For more, see this website.

This J.C. Penney store in Ventura opened here in 1939. The store closed in 1965 when it moved to the Buena Ventura Fashion Center Mall. The building housed Beverly Fabrics for many years. It has housed the C.A.N.N. Thrift Store for decades. [map]

This J.C. Penney store was built in 1953. In 2010, the facade and neon sign were restored. However, the store closed just two years later. The building was vacant when these photos were taken in 2012. The community is fighting to keep the signs in place.
