This Camel is one of two installed in front of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. The building was constructed in 1933 as the Seattle Art Museum. These camels are reproductions. They appear to be made of concrete. The original stone statues are from a tomb from the 15th Century Ming Dynasty. They are now displayed inside the Seattle Art Museum which moved downtown in 1994. For more, see this website. [map]

The World's Largest Elkhorn Arch was built from 1956-1958. It is composed of more than 3,000 antlers mounted on a rectangular iron frame. The antlers were naturally shed and collected by Boy Scouts at the Wyoming Elk Preserve near Jackson, WY. The 75-foot-wide arch spans four lanes of traffic downtown. There are two smaller elkhorn arches on both sides which span the crosswalk. Above the main arch, there was a separate text panel with the city's name lit in neon. The antlers are painted annually with a weatherproof plastic coating. In 2005, the two life-sized bull elk were installed above the arch. The wood statues were created by a local artist, Jonathan LaBenne, aka the Bear Man. When they were installed, the original text panel was removed. The city name is now composed of unlit plastic letters on the base which supports the statues. Since 2018, the arch has been wrapped in strands with thousands of white lights by the local fire department for the Parade of Lights and Christmas holiday season. For more, see this website. [map] |
