The first six stories of the Southern Bell Telephone Company Building were completed in 1929. The original design of Marye, Alger and Vinour called for 25 stories but it was truncated due to the Great Depression. The building was finally completed, with 14 stories, in the 1940s. The microwave communications tower was added in 1963. The building now houses the AT&T Communications Building. For more, see this website. [map]

The Lockeby Building was built in 1937. It may have housed a department store but I don't know which one. I don't believe it was a Kress, McCrory's or G.C. Murphy. It may have housed Loel's Dime Store which would fit the correct number of letters at the top of the building. The building now houses Jenny's Fashions. For more, see this website. [map]
