This Walgreens in New Orleans also opened in 1938. It was their fifth store in Louisiana. There were about 500 other stores in the U.S. at the time. This store is still open. The wording on the sign has been changed a little. It originally read "Cigars" instead of "Photo." It read "Cafeteria" instead of "Prescriptions." Around 2013, the neon was replaced with LED tubing. The former Walgreens in Miami was built in 1936. It was designed by Zimmerman, Saxe and MacBride with E. A. Ehmann as an associate architect. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remained a Walgreens until the mid-1980s. The building features a curved corner entrance and ribbon windows. The Walgreens originally had a soda fountain and its own ice cream plant. The building housed the La Epoca department store from 2005-2018. In 2021, the building was being redeveloped as "Julia & Henry's" which will be a mix of restaurants, retail, and office space. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]
