Dairy Queen Cottonwood, AZ |
This Dairy Queen building was much smaller originally. It probably looked like the buildings shown above in Bisbee and Willcox. The building was expanded about three times in the late 1970s and 1980s. This photo is from 2012. By 2016, the vintage signs had all been removed and replaced with modern logo signs. [map] |
Dairy Queen [gone] Mesa, AZ |
||
This Dairy Queen was built in 1949. It appears that the neon sign was cut off a bit on the bottom in order to fit over the roof. This embossed plastic sign, although newer, was rarer than the neon signs. This was the only square one that I know of. I don't know of any other Dairy Queens with stacked signs like this. These photos are from 2012. By 2016, the plastic sign had been replaced with a square plastic panel with the modern logo. The neon sign remains. In 2018, this location closed. There are plans to demolish the building. The sign was saved by the Mesa Preservation Foundation and will eventually displayed in a sign park downtown. For more, see this website. |
Dairy Queen Casa Grande, AZ |
|
This Dairy Queen opened in the mid-1950s. The sign was installed in the early 1960s. Dairy Queen developed the red "lips" logo in 1960. These lips signs with protruding ice cream cones were mass-produced. In 2016, this sign was endangered when corporate headquarters expressed its intention to replace it with a new sign with the current logo. The city designated the sign a landmark and DQ corporate has backed off from replacing it. There are only a few signs like this still on public display. The location in Stamford, CT fought to keep its sign but lost to corporate demands. There was one in Topeka, KS which corporate also forced the owner to replace with a modern logo sign in 2016. That sign was donated to the Kansas Museum of History. Both of these locations still have the slanted poles. In addition to the Key West location shown below, there is still one of these signs in Austin, MN. There was another sign in Gila Bend, AZ. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map] |

Dairy Queen Manchester, MI |
|
This Dairy Queen is located right next to the River Raisin dam. It was probably built in the 1960s. These photos are from 2011. Sometime after 2014, the middle "Dairy Queen" panel on the front of the building was replaced with a modern DQ swoosh logo sign. This location is closed now. [map] |
Dairy Queen Rochester, MN |
