former station
Richmond, VA
This former station was known as the Triangle Filling Station, named after the triangular lot that it occupied. Although some have said that this building is from 1923 and was the prototype for Pure Oil's other cottage style stations, the facts refute this. It has been well documented that the first Pure Oil cottage was built in Indianapolis in 1927.

This station was built in 1921. In the early 1930s, Pure Oil began operating here and added their cottage details to the building. The station operated until 1953, possibly as a Pure Oil until then. It was still a Pure Oil station in 1947. In 1955, a small restaurant occupied the building. Around 1968, the addition was made to the front for a BBQ take-out restaurant. The building had been vacant since 2009. Around 2015, the building began housing Jus' Fish. The building was vacant in 2018. In 2019, the building was housing J.R. Crickets, another restaurant. This former Pure Oil station housed the Patisserie Cafe when these photos were taken in 2010. The cafe had been there since 2007. Before that, it housed Smokin' Pete's Bar-B-Que Station and Joe's Firehouse Bar-B-Que. The building still has many original details including the blue tile roof and the "P"s on the chimney. Since 2011, the building has housed Pure Eats. [map]

This former Pure Oil station housed Fitzgerald Truck & Equipment when these photos were taken. By 2012, the building housed Herring's Small Engine Repair. In 2015, the building was vacant. This building design with chunky chimneys came after the skinnier chimney design. There is also a bigger display window and the roof features a weathervane tower. By 2018, the building had been painted grey and there was a blue metal roof. It remains vacant. [map]

This former Pure Oil station is an example of the company's single chimney design. These photos are from 2006 and 2007 when the building housed Quality Tire Service. The building was vacant in 2012. Since 2014, the building has housed the Mikado Express Japanese restaurant. The building's facade was covered with rocks. The windows and door configuration was also changed. former Pure Oil station

This former Pure Oil station has been occupied by the Frost Insurance Agency since 1989. It was remodeled with additions but it still retains some of the entrance details. You can see just make out the shape of the original gas station on the side of the building below the lopped off chimney. These photos are from 2007. By 2016, the building had been painted beige and gold. [map]

former Pure Oil station and cottages? [gone]
Atkins, VA
This may have been a drastically remodeled former Pure Oil station. The cottages adjacent to it may have been part of a gas station and motel complex like Pure Village Courts which were built by Pure Oil. These photos are from 2003. By 2009, the Pure Oil sign was gone but the cabins were still there. They had been demolished by 2015.
