Vollis Simpson's Whirligigs

(hit "refresh" to get the most recent version of this page; click on photos for larger images)

Vollis Simpson built these whirigig sculptures on his farm in Lucama, NC since his retirement in 1985. He built thousands of other wind-activated sculptures like this. Many are installed at museums around the country. These photos are from 2010. In 2010, Simpson sold many of his creations to the nearby City of Wilson which plans to install them in a park downtown. In 2013, Simpson passed away. It sounds like the sculptures shown above will be moving to the park. It is expected to open in 2014. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4.
