Air Devils Inn Louisville, KY |
Juanita's Place Louisville, KY |
|
The Air Devils Inn has been here since 1934. This neon sign is supposedly the oldest in Louisville. It is directly across the street from a small airport. For more, see this website. [map]
Juanita's Place is probably not the original name of this liquor store. I don't know if these signs are lit at night but the neon appears to be in good shape. [map] |
Willow Lake Tavern Louisville, KY |
J.R. Collins Cleaners [gone] Louisville, KY |
Modern Living Furniture [gone] Louisville, KY |
|
The Willow Lake Tavern opened sometime in the 1930s but had been closed for years. It reopened in 2007 as a restaurant known as Selena's at Willow Lake Tavern. The sign remains. [map]
J.R. Collins Cleaners was long gone but this sign remained on the vacant lot until around 2022. Modern Living Furniture featured a rooftop sign and another one above their office entrance. These photos are from 2010. By 2014, both signs were gone. For more, see this website. |
Keswick Democratic Club Louisville, KY |
Clarksdale TV Sales & Service Louisville, KY |
Falls City Theatre Equipment Company Louisville, KY |
Starks Parking Center Louisville, KY |
The Keswick Democratic Club sign was probably from the 1950s. By 2019, the sign was covered up with panels for Red Top Dogs. In 2023, the panels were removed and the original panels were visible again. The bar there now is known as The Keswick. [map]
Clarksdale TV Sales & Service opened here in 1938 and they are still in business. For more, see this website. [map] The Falls City Theatre Equipment Company is long gone. This photo is from 2010. In 2015, the sign was removed. In 2018, the neon was repaired and the sign was installed on the side of the Omni Louisville Hotel. For more, see this website. [map] The Starks Parking Center is connected to the Starks Building which was built in 1913. This sign is probably from the 1950s or so. [map] |
Collier's Motel Louisville, KY |
Old Town Liquors Louisville, KY |
Pet's Palace [gone] Louisville, KY |
Collier's Motel features two old signs, one from when it was known as Collier's Court. The plastic sign appears to be an adapted Superior Motel sign. [map]
Old Town Liquors is now known as Old Town Wine & Spirits. [map] The Pet's Palace pet shop opened here in 1957 with this sign. By 2011, the store had relocated and this sign was gone. The new location has a plastic box sign. I'm told that the vintage sign wound up at an antiques store in Edinburgh, IN. |
Schreck's Baxter Liquors Louisville, KY |
Don's Liquors [gone] Louisville, KY |
Bon Air Coin Laundry Louisville, KY |
The Schreck's Baxter Liquors sign depicts a Kentucky colonel. Schreck's original store opened in the 1950s in the Pleasure Ridge Park area and moved here to Baxter Avenue in 1975. I assume this sign is from the earlier store. [map]
From the letters under the whiskey bottle it appears that Don's Liquors was Larry's Liquors originally unless this sign was moved here from somewhere else. This photo is from 2010. By 2014, the store had closed and these signs were gone. The Bon Air Coin Laundry is in the same shopping center where Pet's Palace was located. This sign is probably from the late 1950s or early 1960s. [map] |
Twig & Leaf Restaurant Louisville, KY |
Smith's Furniture [gone] Louisville, KY |
Patrick's Beer Garden and Volk Cleaners Louisville, KY |
|
The Twig & Leaf Restaurant opened in 1960. The sign is lit at night. For more, see this website. [map]
These photos of the Smith's Furniture signs are from 2007. Later that year, the pole sign was replaced with a plastic box sign. By 2011, the store had closed but the neon owl and lettering on the building were still there. Those signs were gone by 2012. Patrick's Beer Garden, an Irish pub, is located right next door to Volk Cleaners. Both signs appear to be from the 1950s. The Volk Cleaners sign was gone by 2021. For more, see this website. [map] |
Bridges Smith & Co. [gone] Louisville, KY |
Peerless Electronic Supplies Louisville, KY |
The Bridges Smith & Co. painting supplies company was established in 1875. In 2010, the company announced that it was moving. This sign was sold to a private collector. For more, see this website.
Peerless Electronic Supplies was founded in 1932. This sign is probably from the 1950s or later. [map] |
Kentucky Mirror & Plate Glass Louisville, KY |
Gray Seal Paint Louisville, KY |
||
Kentucky Mirror & Plate Glass features a neon sign in the shape of the state of Kentucky. The store is on a one-way street so the neon was only installed on the side which faces traffic. [map]
Gray Seal Paint was founded in 1912. The paint is still produced in Louisville by Progress Brands. This plastic sign (left photo) hung on the side of the Kentucky Mirror & Plate Glass building for many years. In 2008, the sign's panels were replaced (right photo). The wording was changed and a photographic portrait replaced the Gray Seal character. [map] |
Norman's Glass & Custom Framing [gone] Louisville, KY |
Norman's Glass & Custom Framing has been around since 1948. This sign is probably from that time. The store is still open. In 2012, during a facade renovation, the sign was donated to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, OH. For more, see this website. |
Nally's Barber Shop Louisville, KY |
Gerstle's Place Louisville, KY |
Baker Boy Donuts Louisville, KY |
The Nally's Barber Shop opened in 1950. This sign appears to be from then. It hadn't been lit since 1957. In 2015, the new owner had the sign restored by the Rueff Sign Company. [map]
Gerstle's Place was established in 1924. This sign is probably from the 1950s or earlier. [map] This Baker Boy Donuts sign was uncovered during development in 2012. This photo is from then. The sign panels have been preserved. The sign may be from the 1950s. However, there are no records of a Baker Boy business in Louisville. Some say a soda fountain in the building may have sold doughnuts and installed the sign or that it may have been installed by a bar as a joke. [map] |
