Congress Inn
St. Ann, MO
This Congress Inn sign is probably from the 1960s. This motel was part of a chain. The top part of this sign has been changed to read Congress Airport Inn. The sign would have originally looked like this one. There was a better-preserved example of these signs in Nashville, TN. [map]

More St. Ann:
Airway Drive-in
American Doughnut Company [gone]

Buse's
Flowers [gone]
St. Charles, MO
Clark Auto
St. Charles, MO
Buse's Flowers opened in the late 1800s. This sign was probably from the 1950s or earlier. The original FTD logo was covered with a Teleflora logo in 2005. The sign was removed in 2020 and is now in a private collection. For more, see this website.

This used cars sign at Clark Auto was mass-produced and apparently installed nationwide. There is an identical sign in Troy, NY and another in St. Joseph, MO that is missing its streamers. I don't know if there was a make of car associated with these signs like Chevrolet's "OK" used car signs. [map]

The Soda Museum
St. Charles, MO
These signs are located inside The Soda Museum. The Venker Drug sign is an example of a mass-produced Coca-Cola "privilege sign" which could be customized with the name of the business where it was to be displayed. These were double-sided signs but this one has only one side remaining. The A&W and Budweiser signs were also mass-produced. The St. Charles Dairy Co. was a local company. All of these signs appear to be from the 1950s.

Neon Time
St. Charles, MO
The Neon Time sign shop is owned by Dave Hutson. He manufactures new signs and restores old ones. A small collection of vintage signs are on display at his shop. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Belmont
Furniture
House
St. Clair, MO
Stag Beer
St. James, MO
The Belmont Furniture House sign is probably from the 1930s or 1940s. The store is gone but the sign remains. [map]

These Stag Beer signs were mass-produced. This one is installed at Johnnie's Bar which opened in the 1960s. The building didn't house a bar before that so the 1950s-looking sign must have come from somewhere else. [map]

More St. Clair:
Arch Motel [vintage; gone]

More St. James:
Murdon Concrete Products

St. John:
McCarty Studio [gone]

Wing Printing
St. Joseph, MO
Womach Motors
St. Joseph, MO
The Wing Printing Co. was established in 1912. This sign is probably from the 1940s or 1950s. [map]

Womach Motors opened in 1961 and this sign is probably from then. [map]

Modern Cleaners
St. Joseph, MO
American
Electric Co.
St. Joseph, MO
IBEW Electrical Workers
St. Joseph, MO

Modern Cleaners opened in the 1950s. This sign is probably from the 1960s. [map] American Electric Co. sells wholesale electrical equipment and supplies. This sign was moved here from the company's 3rd St. location in 2017 when it was converted into lofts. The sign looks like it was built in the 1950s and most likely had neon originally. [map]

This IBEW Electrical Workers union office is still located here. This sign is probably from the 1950s. [map]

Don Bisig's Barber Shop
St. Joseph, MO
2010: 2024:

Don Bisig's Barber Shop opened in 1962. Around 2018, the business closed and the sign was removed. In 2020, the sign was adapted for the Gentleman's Chair Barber Shop and reinstalled. For more, see this website. [map]

Bucket
Shop [gone]
St. Joseph, MO
Terrible's
Casino [gone]
St. Joseph, MO
Pony Express Motel
St. Joseph, MO
The Bucket Shop restaurant had been around since at least the 1940s. This sign was probably from the 1950s. Around 2009, a new owner renamed the place Little Boudreaux's Bucket Shop. At that point, the sign was restored and the wording was changed slightly. This photo is from 2010. By 2013, the business and sign were gone. For more, see this website.

Terrible's Casino opened in 1994. I assume this sign was from then. This photo was taken in 2010. The place is now known as the Frontier Casino and this sign is gone. There was another sign like this one at the Terrible's Casino in Osceola, IA.

The Pony Express Motel sign has been through a few iterations over the years. I believe the motel was built around 1960. In the early 1960s, the sign was half this size. A panel with the name of the motel was located beneath the galloping horse. The sign was rebuilt in the mid-1960s to its current look. For a while, there was a Best Western logo on top of the sign. The motel was demolished in 2006 for a shopping center. The sign was saved, restored, and installed in 2008 at the Pony Express Museum in town. St. Joseph is where the Pony Express began. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [map]

Speedy's Convenience
St. Joseph, MO
There are at least eight of these Speedy's Convenience stores around St. Joseph, all featuring these animated, galloping neon racehorse signs. The signs shown here are from two different locations. These Speedy's stores are located at Sinclair gas stations. [2420 Frederick map]; [4007 Frederick map]; [Mitchell map]; [S. Belt Hwy. map]; [2221 N. Belt Hwy. map]; [2317 N.
