The Hot Dog on a Stick was established in 1946 at this location as Party Puffs selling ice cream and lemonade. The stand evolved into selling corndogs and was renamed Hot Dog on a Stick. The original building was demolished in 2022 and replaced with this slightly larger building with upgraded infrastructure. There are now more than 50 other locations around the country. [map]

Zucky's Restaurant was designed by Weldon J. Fulton and opened in 1954. The restaurant closed in 1993. The building sat empty until 2008 when it reopened as a bank. The rockwork and the sign tower were left intact although the tower itself was originally painted brown not green. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Pancho's Tacos opened in 1977. The restaurant moved to this location around 1999. This building was built in 1958. Does anyone know what business was here originally? This photo is from 2013. In 2015, the building was painted blue and the sign was painted over. [map]

former Penguin Coffee Shop

2018:
The Penguin Coffee Shop was designed by Armet & Davis. It was built in 1959. The sign was originally taller. It had more panels and neon tubing. There was also a different penguin on top of the sign. The restaurant closed around 1990. From 1991-2016, the building housed Dr. Beauchamp Western Dental. The sign was adapted. In 2017, renovation began to convert the building into a Mel's Drive-in. The sign was adapted again. The restaurant opened in 2018. [map]

Callahan's Restaurant (now Ingo's Tasty Diner)

2015:
Callahan's Restaurant opened in 1946 and closed in 2014. In 2015, Ingo's Tasty Diner opened in the space. The neon "Restaurant" sign and terrazzo remains. The counter remains but the stools have been replaced with chairs. The booths have a more modern look. Vienna Pastry on the corner closed in 2021. The "since 1927" on the door was added for a movie shoot and never removed. For more, see this website. [map]

former Parasol Restaurant

2015:
The first Parasol Restaurant opened in Torrance, CA in 1961. That building was demolished in 2001 for a Walgreen's. The Parasol Restaurant in Seal Beach opened in 1967. The building was nearly demolished before it reopened as a Mel's Drive-in in 2007. The original sign was adapted and the exterior is pretty much the same. However, the interior was gutted.
