former drive-in? Alturas, CA |
This building looks like it has integrated a former drive-in canopy. It now houses One Thai Oshi. Does anyone know what was here originally? [map] |
Andre's Drive-in Bakersfield, CA 2017: |
|
2022: |
This Andre's Drive-in was the original location on Niles St. It was built in 1955. It closed in 2020 and this sign was restored and installed at the Kern County Museum. The building survives and now houses Kings Drive-in. [map] |
Andre's Drive-in Bakersfield, CA 2013 and 2014: |
||
2017: | ||
This Andre's Drive-in on Brundage Lane opened in 1957. Both of these locations have extendable canopies that run on wires between poles. In 2016, the sign was repainted. The neon was replaced with LED strip tubing. For more, see this website. [map] |
Carla's Drive-in Bakersfield, CA |
The Carla's Drive-in building appears to be from the 1950s or 1960s. I don't know if it has always been Carla's. [map] |
Jolly Kone Drive-in [gone] Bakersfield, CA 2012: |
||
2022: |
The Jolly Kone Drive-in appeared to be from the 1950s or 1960s. There are two other Jolly Kone locations in Bakersfield as well as many others in California. However, I don't think any of them have neon signs. This location closed in 2018 and was demolished for highway expansion. The lower neon sign has been restored and is now displayed at the Kern County Museum in town which has a collection of local signs. I don't know what happened with the arrow or the upper sign. For more, see this website. |
Jolly Kone Drive-in Bridgeport, CA |
This Jolly Kone Drive-in opened in 1964. [map] |
Jolly Kone Drive-Inn Wasco, CA |
|
The Jolly Kone Drive-Inn is probably from the 1950s or 1960s. It may have gone by a different name originally. The ice cream and hamburger pieces are obviously later additions. The business closed around 2019. [map] |
Whitey's Jolly Kone Drive-in West Sacramento, CA |
|
Whitey's Jolly Kone Drive-in opened in 1962. I assume this stand was related to the Jolly Kone locations in Bakersfield, Bridgeport, and Exeter. [map] |
Frosty King Exeter, CA |
|
This Frosty King was originally built as Whitey's Jolly Kone. The Exeter location has been Frosty King since at least 2007. Sometime after 2010, the building was remodeled and this canopy was added. These photos are from 2014. For more, see this website. There are other Frosty Kings in nearby cities that occupy former A&W Drive-ins. [map] |
Frosty King Taft, CA |
|
This Frosty King appears to be from the 1950s or 1960s. [map]
There is another Frosty King in Bakersfield, CA. |
Astro Burger Boron, CA |
|
Astro Burger has been here since 1972. It closed in 2020. The property is now surrounded by chain link fencing. [map] |
