former station
Knoxville, IL
This former station is a bit of fantasy piece "restoration". Around 2015, the owner took an oblong building that previously housed a gas station and turned it into this creation. He added a canopy, bricks, and signs based on a 1924 photo of People's Oil station and the owner's memories of a Shell station in Knoxville in the 1950s and 1960s. The owner used the buildings as a workshop. [map]

The building housed several cafe and auto-related businesses over the years. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration work began in 2009. In 2017, the building began housing Ryburn Place, a Route 66 information center and gift shop. Replica Cities Service gas pumps were installed. [map]
