former station Longview, TX |
This double canopy former station housed a repair garage when this photo was taken in 2011. By 2013, the building housed the Clean as a Whistle car wash. The building appears to be vacant now. Does anyone know what brand of gas was sold here originally? [map] |
former station Fort Worth, TX |
This former station housed auto-related businesses for at least ten years before the Wag Canine Emporium moved into the building in 2017. The building now houses Cacti & Crescent, a home furnishings store. [map] |
former station Granbury, TX |
This former station was supposedly built in 1933 as a Sinclair station. However, it does not look like a 1930s building to me, maybe 1950s. By 2001, the building has housed a restaurant. It now houses the Pearl Street Station. [map] |
former station Big Spring, TX |
|
I believe this former station was built as a Cities Service station. The height of the bay and the shape of the office with the chopped-off corner with door appear to be a match for this station in Tulsa, OK. I believe these features were unique to Cities Service. This building has been dressed up with these various gas station signs since at least 2007. It appears to be used as a car repair shop now. [map] |
former Panhandle Oil station Burkburnett, TX |
||
This former Panhandle Oil station was in bad shape in 2007. The top of the canopy was missing. The building was restored around 2012 by the Burkburnett Historical Society. [map] |
former station Wichita Falls, TX |
|
I believe this former station was built as a Panhandle Oil station based on the projections on the top of the canopy and the side of the building. It has been vacant since at least 2007. It last served as a Mobil station. The building was repainted just before these photos in 2018. It now houses the Union Square Cash Station ATM. [map] |
Kimbrough's Super Service Odessa, TX |
||
Kimbrough's Super Service was built in 1955. It has been vacant for many years. In 2022, the sign was removed and moved to Cook's Garage in Lubbock, TX. By 2024, the gas pumps had been removed. [map] |
former station Kilgore, TX |
This former station was abandoned when this photo was taken in 2011. I have never seen a curved pump island or a canopy with a curve in front like this. By 2013, the canopy and pumps had been removed. The building appears to be vacant now. [map] |
former Crown Oil station Houston, TX |
former station [gone] Edna, TX |
This former Crown Oil station was built around 1960. This was still an operating station until around 2022 although the Crown brand is long gone. The pumps and islands are gone now but the building is operating as a convenience store. For more, see this website. [map]
This former station was vacant when this photo was taken in 2011. By 2013, it had been demolished. |
former station Amarillo, TX |
This former Shamrock station now houses Moe Dogs Grill. [map] |
former station Plainview, TX |
This former station was probably built as a Humble or Enco station (the Esso brands in Texas). The building has been vacant for many years. [map] |
former station [gone] Sulphur Springs, TX |
|
This former station was built as a Humble or Enco station. The building has been vacant since at least 2007. The building was demolished in 2018. |
former station Grapevine, TX |
|
This former station was either built as a Humble or Enco station. The building has housed Jet Fast Inspection since at least 2007. [map] |
former Fina station Plainview, TX |
|
This Fina station was built around 1963-1964. The same design was used in Canada by Petrofina in the late 1950s. I'd love to know the locations of any still-existing mushroom canopy stations like this. This building is now occupied by Mr. Payroll, a check cashing business. [map] |
former Fina station Farmers Branch, TX |
|
This former Fina station now houses Alex Auto Repair. There might have been more than one mushroom canopy originally. [map] |
former Mobil station Dallas, TX |
|
This former Mobil station is now the Green Spot Market & Fuel. Although new pumps have been installed, three Eliot Noyes designed mushroom canopies have been preserved. There are very few of these left. There are another pair of these in Dallas. Some other examples are in Hamden, CT [gone] and Thomasville and Denton, NC. [map] |
former Bell Service station Abilene, TX 2011: |
||
2017: |
Charlie Hailey's Bell Service station was built in 1956. It housed an Advance Funding office in 2011. It now houses a used car lot office. I have not seen this building design anywhere else. [map] |
former Texaco station Tahoka, TX |
This former Texaco station is an example of the company's Matawan design which was introduced in 1965. The building was vacant when this photo was taken in 2012. Later in 2012, the roof and canopy were painted red. It now houses Papa Joe's Liquor. The pumps have been removed and there is a metal screen blocking the view of the front of the building. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map] |
former Taylor Food Mart Amarillo, TX 2012: |
|
2017: |
This former Taylor Food Mart gas station convenience store was probably built in the 1960s. The station was operating independently in 2012. The pumps are still there but the station has been closed since around 2017. [map] |
former Taylor Food Mart Amarillo, TX |
This former Taylor Food Mart gas station convenience store was built in 1970. The building has housed American Vengeance Tattoo since at least 2012. [map]
This building in Amarillo was probably a Taylor Food Mart originally. It was demolished around 2017. |
former Chevron station [gone] El Paso, TX |
|
This former Chevron station was known as Good Time Gas when these photos were taken in 2012. The canopy looked like it might be from the 1970s or 1980s. By 2015, the pumps were gone. By 2017, the station had been demolished. |
