Equitable Gas clock
Pittsburgh, PA
2001: 2010:
The Equitable Gas clock was originally part of the Duquesne Brewery. It was built in 1933. With a diameter of 60 feet, it was the largest single face clock in the world at the time. The brewery opened in 1899 and closed in the 1970s. The clock was stopped at 6:30 for at least ten years. At some point, Stroh's took over the building and painted their logo over the clock. In 2002, Equitable Gas restored the clock and added their name. In 2009, the clock was leased to AT&T and the clock was repainted again. The clock was still orange and bore the AT&T name in 2014. By 2016, the clock had been painted grey and was brand-less. For more, see this website. [map]

Alvin's Jewelry [gone]
Pittsburgh, PA
Bambi Cleaners
Philadelphia, PA
The Alvin's Jewelry sign appears to be from the 1950s. This photo is from 2010. By 2011, the business and sign were gone.

Bambi Cleaners was established in 1954. The business moved to this located around 1957. This sign is probably from then or the early 1960s. It was built by Angelo Colavita of Colonial Signs. Since this photo from 2010, only one of the plastic balls on top of the sign remains. [map]

Lancaster Kiest
Shopping Center [gone]
Dallas, TX
Pitcock Oil & Gas is still in business. The sign's clock and thermometer no longer work. [map]

Joe Koen & Son Jewelers was established in 1883. The company moved to this location in 1972 and must have brought along this pre-1950s sign. The latest Street View map from 2023 shows the clock and neon missing which I'm hoping is a sign of a restoration in progress. [map]

The Lancaster Kiest Shopping Center was built in 1960. This photo is from 2011. By 2014, the sign was gone.

The Guy L. McNutt Insurance sign appears to be from the 1940s or 1950s. [map]

Cox Florist [gone]
Mineral Wells, TX
The Cox Florist sign was probably from at least the 1950s. The neon was only installed on one side since this sign was located on a one-way street. This photo is from 2011. The sign was still there in 2013. By 2018, the flower shop was going by a different name. The text panel was removed but the clock is still there.

Coca-Cola
Norton, VA
This Coca-Cola sign was built in 1936. It was probably produced by Federal Electric. I have not seen a Coca-Cola sign like this before. It may have been unique. There must have been a restaurant here when the sign was installed. There is a gift shop below the sign now. In 2018, the sign was removed for restoration by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated in Charlotte, NC. It was reinstalled in 2019. [map]

The Klose-In Motel opened in 1930 as the Klose Inn Auto Court. This sign was built in 1951. The sign was restored shortly after this photo was taken in 2008. There was a natural gas explosion in 2014 that damaged the motel. The motel was demolished in 2017 and the sign was removed. It is now in storage at the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI). For more, see this website.

The Natalia's Cafe sign previously advertised for the Ideal Corner Cafe. Natalia's Cafe has been here since 2003. The sign is probably from the 1950s. [map]

VFW
Martinsburg, WV
Peerless Laundry
Mullens, WV
The Kenosha Glass Service neon sign was built in 1964 by the Kenosha Sign Co. The revolving clock and temperature indicator were added later. The hands were removed because it was too time-consuming to keep changing the time and fixing them. In 2018, the signs were removed due to road expansion. The signs were sold to a collector in Iowa.

Le Esther's Lamp Shop was established by Leo and Esther Meyer in 1938. This sign might be from then or slightly later. [map]

This VFW sign may be from the 1950s. It is lit at night. For more, see this website. [map]
