Rhodes Burford Furniture had been closed for many years but this sign was still there when this photo was taken in 2010. This sign is probably from the 1940s. By late 2012, the sign and building were gone.
The Garden Inn Motel sign was inspired by the Holiday Inn Great Sign. The sign was removed by 2019 and is now in a private collection. |

Mack's Restaurant started out as a small barbecue stand in 1917. By the 1930s, the business had expanded to a sit-down restaurant. This sign is probably from the 1950s. The restaurant closed in 2014 after a fire but the sign remains. The neon is gone now. [map]
The Belvedere Motel was built in 1936. This sign is probably from the 1950s. By 2015, it had been removed. It is now displayed at the Carpet Gallery in Poplar Bluff, MO. For more, see this website. [map] |

The Carmi Times was established in 1950 and this sign was probably erected at the same time. This sign was gone by 2022.
The Cafe Mobilgas featured these two signs. The Pegasus, aka the Flying Horse, was the symbol of Mobilgas. When these photos were taken in 2006, the gas pumps had been removed and the restaurant looked like it had been closed for a long time. I believe that the Pegasus sign is gone but the text sign was still there in 2018. [map] |

Straith's Jewelry was established in 1939. This sign appears to be from the 1950s or 1960s. [map] The Home Motel sign appeared to be from the 1950s. It was gone by 2022. For more, see this website. The Holiday Motel sign features the same design that was used for some other motels in Illinois including the Nashville Motel and the Cinderella Motel. Although the motel has been demolished, the sign remains. [map] |

This Independent Order of Odd Fellows sign was probably from the 1930s or 1940s. The lodge was built in 1848. The sign was gone by 2016. The Sandy's Motel sign appeared to be from the 1950s. It fell over in a windstorm in 2023. It is now in a private collection. A new sign is being produced.
The Soy City Motel name is a reference to Decatur's nickname and claim to be the Soybean Capital of the World. For more, see this website. [map] Del's Popcorn Shop opened in 1934 as The Popcorn Shop. In 1946, the name was changed to Del's Popcorn Shop. I assume this sign was built at that time. Another location opened in Springfield, IL in 1980. For more, see this website. [map] Raupp's Shoes opened here in 1909. This sign is probably from the 1940s or 1950s. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map] The Rigdon Auto Glass sign is probably from the 1960s. The Sugar Bowl restaurant opened in 1921. This sign was built in 1957. The text on the bottom part of the sign originally alternated between "Sweet Shop" and "Ice Cream". In 2009, the new owner wanted to alter the sign with a new business name but the City prohibited it.
