Novato Theatre [gone]
Novato, CA
2008: 2016:
The Novato Theatre was built in 1948 and closed in 1991. In 2010, the City sold the theatre to a non-profit group which intends to reopen the theatre as a film and performing arts venue. In 2016, the building was completely gutted and the sign was removed. The sign is in storage but there are no plans to rebuild the theatre at this point. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Grand Lake Theatre
Oakland, CA
The Grand Lake Theatre was built in 1926 as a vaudeville and silent movie house. It was renovated in 1980. The theatre remains in operation as a movie house. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Oakland Fox Theatre
Oakland, CA
The Oakland Fox Theatre opened in 1928 and closed in 1960s. It was nearly demolished in the 1970s. The marquee sign was restored in 2001 and the restoration of the interior began. The theatre reopened in 2009 as a concert venue. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. [map]

Parkway Theatre

The Parkway Theatre opened in 1925 and closed in 2009. In 2021, the building was renovated for the Ivy Hill at the Parkway cannabis store. The store may offer entertainment later on. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [map]

Fairfax Theatre

Paramount Theatre
Oakland, CA
The Fairfax Theatre was built in 1926. It closed in 1972 and the building now houses a church. For more, see this website. [map]

The Paramount Theatre was designed by Timothy L. Plueger and opened in 1931. The sign and marquee were built by Electrical Products (EPCO). The theatre closed in 1970. Star Theatre
Oceanside, CA
The Star Theatre opened in 1956. In the late 1980s, it became an adult movie house. In 1989, the Star resumed showing regular movies again. River Theatre
Oildale, CA
The River Theatre was built in 1939. It closed in 1968. From 1968-1992, Buck Owens used the building as a recording studio. Under different owners, it continued to be used as a recording studio until 2008. The building appeared to be vacant when these photos were taken in 2012. It was still vacant in 2022. Orange, CA
The Granada Theatre was built in 1925. It is now used for live performances and special events. For more, see this website. [map]

The Orange Theatre opened in 1929. The building has housed the Son Light Christian Center since around 1975. For more, see this website. [map]

Cove Theatre

The Cove Theatre opened in 1946. The building now houses a church. By 2022m the marquee signs and readerboards were gone. For more, see this website. [map]

Orinda, CA
