Haffner's Gasoline Lowell, MA |
|||
Haffner's Gasoline was established in 1925 in Lawrence, MA. They now have 14 gas stations, many with car washes, in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
The Haffner's station sign in Lowell features an animated neon donkey with the the company's "It Kicks!" slogan. The sign's top piece of plastic was missing in 2010. By 2011, it was replaced (third photo). The sign is still lit at night. The "Lubritorium" building appears to be an old service garage. This station's three-peaked canopy is covered with red and white porcelain enamel steel tiles. The canopy was probably a relatively recent addition. [map] There is also a more modern looking location in Lowell with what appears to be a vintage sign. [map] |

I believe this Haffner's station is the only other one with the neon donkey sign. The neon is only partially lit on both sides. I don't know if this building was always a Haffner's station. The red and white tiles on the roof were probably added later. [map] |

This Haffner's station appears to be from the 1920s or 1930s. I don't know if it was built as a Haffner's. The roof is also covered with red and white tiles. [map] |

This Haffner's station is brand-new looking with a giant canopy and car wash. This modern building features the red and white tiles. [map] |
