Peoples Missionary Baptist Church Dallas, TX |
The Peoples Missionary Baptist Church sign is probably from the 1950s. [map] |
Steinway & Sons Pianos Dallas, TX |
Anchor Motel Dallas, TX |
Texas Paint & Wallpaper Dallas, TX |
|
The Steinway & Sons Pianos sign is probably 1959 when the building was constructed for Rogers Electric Supply. The sign was probably adapted when Steinway moved into the building in 1992. The top part of the sign was a bulb-studded disk at that point. The "PIANOS" letters originally read "ROGERS". The sign was restored in 2012. For more, see this website. [map]
The Anchor Motel has been here since at least the mid-1960s. This photo is from 2011. Around 2014, the neon letters were replaced with backlit plastic. For more, see this website. [map] Texas Paint & Wallpaper has been around since 1947. This sign is probably from the 1960s or so. It has been repainted since these photos. The wood grain has been painted solid red with the company's logo. For more paint can signs, see this page. [map] |
Texas Liquor [gone] Dallas, TX |
Danny's Liquor Dallas, TX |
||
The Texas Liquor and Danny's Liquor signs are probably from the 1960s. I assume these stores were part of the same chain at one time. Danny's has been closed since around 2016. This sign is very similar to the Bonanza Homes signs which were built in Tennessee, Texas, California, and probably elsewhere. I don't know which signs came first or may have inspired the others. The Texas Liquor sign was removed in 2017 just after these photos were taken. [Danny's map] |
Clearview Louver Window Corp. [gone] Dallas, TX |
Motel Winnway Dallas, TX |
Cabrera Auto Service Dallas, TX |
|
The Clearview Louver Window Corp. was long gone but this sign remained until 2020. It was probably built in the 1940s or 1950s. The bottom panel that read "Louver Windows" had been painted over. The space housed the Club Clearview nightclub from 1985-2007. For more, see this website.
The Motel Winnway sign is probably from the 1940s or 1950s. The two arrows were probably later additions. The sign was repainted around 2016, eliminating the word "Motel" and the bulbs from the top arrow. The Winnway name has been a tacked-on panel (still visible under the paint) indicating that the motel went by another name originally. For more, see this website. [map] The Cabrera Auto Service sign is probably from the 1950s or 1960s. There may have been another muffler shop business (Muffler King?) here originally but the sign has looked like this and Cabrera Auto Service has been here since at least 2008. [map] |
Ray's Sporting Goods Dallas, TX |
El Fenix Restaurant McKinney Ave. Dallas, TX |
El Fenix Restaurant [gone] Colorado Blvd. Dallas, TX |
Ray's Sporting Goods was established in 1949. This sign is probably from the late 1950s or 1960s. [map]
The El Fenix Restaurant chain was established in 1918. There are now about 20 locations, mainly in Dallas/Fort Worth. These signs were probably built in the 1950s or 1960s. The Colorado Blvd. location was demolished around 2020 and that sign is gone. For more, see this website. [McKinney map] |
Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant Dallas, TX |
The Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant opened in 1950. The first Campisi's Italian restaurant opened in 1956. To save money, when the business moved to this location, previous sign which advertised for the Egyptian Lounge was adapted. The word "Lounge" was changed to "Restaurant". For more, see this website. [map] |
Truett-Worrall Company Dallas, TX |
|
The Truett-Worrall Company was established in 1940. The company moved to this location in 1955. These signs appear to be from then. The pole sign is similar to these in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Hutchins. [map] |
Optical Clinic Dallas, TX |
Oak Cliff Mirror & Glass Company Dallas, TX |
The Optical Clinic sign is probably from the 1950s or 1960s. [map]
The Oak Cliff Mirror & Glass Company was established in 1932. The company moved to this location in 1956 and this rooftop sign was probably installed then. For more, see this website. [map] |
Cliff Temple Baptist Church Dallas, TX |
The Cliff Temple Baptist Church sign was probably added to the front of the church in the 1950s. [map] |
Goody Goody Liquor Dallas, TX |
Mosaic Apartments Dallas, TX |
White Rock Automotive Garage Dallas, TX |
Belmont Garage Dallas, TX |
Goody Goody Liquor was established in Dallas in 1964. There are now 21 locations in Texas. This was the third location and opened in 1984. This sign must be from then. [map]
The Mosaic Apartments sign was built around 2007 when the building was converted to apartments. [map] The White Rock Automotive Garage was established in 1964. This sign is most likely from then. [map] The Belmont Garage opened in 1963. This sign appears to be from then. The business closed in 2022. In 2024, the sign's bottom panel was adapted for Integrity 1st Automotive. [map] |
former parking sign Dallas, TX |
West End Attended Parking Dallas, TX |
Stop at Lamar Auto Glass Dallas, TX |
This former parking sign is installed in Main Street Garden Park where the former parking garage was located. I think there were also "ING" letters but I don't know how the letters were configured as part of the sign or when the sign was built. I suspect that the original channel letters had neon tubing inside since the bulbs look very modern. [map]
The West End Attended Parking might be from the 1950s. It could also be from much later than that. The parking garage was built in 1925 for the Sanger Brothers Department Store. For more, see this website. [map] The Stop at Lamar Auto Glass sign previously advertised for the Coolers Liquor store. The sign is probably from the 1950s or 1960s. [map] |
Earle M. Jorgensen Company Dallas, TX |
|
Earle M. Jorgensen Company, now EMJ, was established in 1921. There are now about 30 locations nationwide. There are very similar signs in Tulsa, OK and Lynwood, CA . They were probably built in the 1950s. [map] |
Sons of Hermann Dallas, TX |
The Sons of Hermann fraternal organization was founded in 1840. This hall was built in 1911. The building is now used as a dance hall, event space, and music venue. This sign is probably from the 1950s. [map] |
