The Bali Hai restaurant opened in 1953 as "The Hut." It was part of a small local chain that started with "Christian's Hut" in Newport Beach, CA. In 1955, the new owner changed the name to "Bali Hai." The restaurant's round building offers views of the waterfront and is topped with a man's head known as "The Goof". The Shelter Island Inn was built in 1960. It was designed by Richard George Wheeler & Associates. The building now houses the Best Western Island Palms Hotel. By 2016, the thatched roof had been replaced and the projecting beam had been shortened. [map] |

The Humphrey's Restaurant was designed by Armet & Davis with with Glenn W. Lundberg in 1965. Although the building was designed for the Tahiti restaurant, it actually opened as L'Escale. [map] |

The Point Loma Villas were built in 1965 as the Halemaki Apartments. There used to be a lot more color and details. The units are now condos. [map]
The Freaky Boutiki opened in 1999. The store sells tiki related items such as mugs, shirts, tropical art and carvings, and nautical gifts. In 2006, the store was remodeled and this "largest tiki in San Diego" was built on the side of the building. The neon tiki in the front window also appeared to be modern. It was removed in 2016. By 2021, the building was housing a tattoo studio and the tiki was gone. |
